The body of work in this exhibition conveys layers of thoughts and memories in growing up and growing old as a female. These layers protect and heal - just like the many layers of our skin does. It makes us who we are individually. Works include paintings, sculptures, textiles and wearable art garments. ALEX SELENITSCH returns to Craft Victoria from 22 Oct – 27 November to explore theme and variation, creative use of found material and sentimental tribute. Using a stack of found die-cut cardboard sheets, Alex Selenitsch has created a series of ‘unintended’ boxes, containers and objects. The original stack of cardboard was found in the garage of the artist’s deceased father-in-law. This work is a tribute to his father-in-law’s independent, un-conforming personality. Selenitsch has creatively approached the source material by constructing 94 unique forms, each of which is a variation on the expected, standardised assemblage of the cardboard template. Although there are many more variations which could have been formed, Selenitsch stopped at 94 because his father-in-law did. Out of the Box: 94 Variations continues Selenitsch’s interest in making the stereotype nervous. Alex Selenitsch is a Melbourne-based poet and architect. He has taught architectural design, theory and history at Deakin University, RMIT and the University of Melbourne and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning, the University of Melbourne. He is represented by grahame galleries + editions, Brisbane, and Place Gallery, Melbourne. Craft Victoria is located at 31 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, Victoria, 3000. Over the past three years more than 25 Tasmanian Aboriginal women, aged from 7 to 87, have journeyed together across the island in a determined process of cultural retrieval. "The impetus for the tayenebe project has been the desire to reconnect with the cultural craft of Ancestors. Thirty-seven Aboriginal woven-twined baskets created during the 1800s from lily, iris, sedges and rushes that survive in museums internationally are particularly inspirational for these makers." The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, the National Museum of Australia and Arts Tasmania co-managed the project to ensure that the women involved had support and opportunities to express ideas from making to exhibition to writing and planning future work.’ There is a catalogue available from http://museumshop.tmag.tas.gov.au/store/viewItem.shop?idProduct=101 THE JOHNSTON COLLECTION: ‘a hidden treasure, a jewel in the heart of Melbourne.’ Offered: tours, exhibitions and a lecture program; also a reference library at Fairhall the residence of the late William Johnston.
