TASMANIA

PAPER ON SKIN: The inaugural BURNIE WEARABLE PAPER ART COMPETITION 2012 will be presented by the Burnie Arts Council, a branch of Tasmanian Regional Arts, in conjunction with the Burnie Regional Art Gallery, and the Burnie Makers’ Workshop. Gala Parade Award Evening: MAY 25, 2012 when prize winners will be announced. Exhibition dates for selected works at Makers’ Workshop: 1 June – 15 July.

The Gala Award Evening includes a catwalk parade of entries, refreshments and entertainment. The judging panel will be Greg Leong, Director Burnie Arts and Function Centre and Burnie Regional Art Gallery; Glenda King, Manager Visual Arts & Design, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston; and Colleen Burke, Melbourne based Artist, Designer, Creator. Awards: $2500 Betta Milk Open Award. $2500 Sustainable Fashion Award using recycled paper: Betta Milk and Burnie Regional Art Gallery. Special Bonus Makers’ Workshop prize of $1000 for work featuring handmade paper from Creative Paper, Burnie. Entry forms will be inserted in the next issue of “Fibre Forum” or downloadable from www.burniearts.net early in February (Selected ‘Arts & Community’ on the home page and click on “paper on skin”. Conditions: artist to be Australian and over 18; work from no less than 80% paper. Works must be in excellent wearable condition and suitable to be paraded. Closing date for entry forms: Friday 16 March. Selection made in late March.

WEARABLE PAPER ART DESIGN WORKSHOP Sat/Sun March 10/11 2012. Colleen Burke, Melbourne based artist/designer will conduct a two-day hands-on workshop as a lead up to the Burnie Wearable Paper Art Competition; fees apply. Enquiries to Pam Thorne: nthorne@tassie.net.au (phone 03.64330246).

Substantial FIBRE PRIZE – The CITY OF HOBART ART PRIZE is a cultural initiative of Hobart City Council. The 2012 City of Hobart Art Prize is open to artists, designers and craftspeople across Australia. It brings together contemporary visual art, craft and design practice in a single exhibition. Categories: FIBRE: works of art, craft or design utilising fibre as the primary media. Paint: works of art utilising paint as the primary media. Prizes: Two x $15,000 acquisitive City of Hobart Art Prizes (one in each category). $1,000 People's Choice Award. Judges Sue Backhouse, Senior Curator of Art, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery; Joe Pascoe, CEO/Artistic Director, Craft Victoria; Wayne Tunnicliffe, Head Curator, Australian Art, Art Gallery of NSW. The next ART ON LEGS will be held on August 4th 2012 at the Farrall Centre, Friends School Hobart. Entry forms available from the website in November 2011 www.fashionfashion.com.au. All enquiries to artonlegs@gmail.com Art on Legs, previously known as Australia’s Fashion Fantasia was successfully relaunched in time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this wearable art competition. The show was held at the Farrall Centre at The Friends School in Hobart on Saturday 30th July 2011. Founded in 2002 by Rossy Roberts-Thomson the show has always received outstanding reviews. Garments were submitted from all over Australia; as well the work of Kirry Toose (NSW), Sabrina Evans (TAS) and Michelle Rolins (TAS) was featured, and the more than life size puppets created by the children of St Aloysius School from Kingston (Tas) took pride of place. The winner of the 1st prize $2000 Acquisition was Sabrina Evans of Hobart with her entry in Existence 2050 titled “Port Arthur”. 2nd Prize of $1000 went to Maggie Wretham (QLD) for her entry in Rags/Riches titled “Silk to Junk Mail Kimono”. 3rd Prize went to Bonnie Begg and Christine (ACT) White for their entry in Dreamtime titled “Haveachat”. The student 1st Prize went to Hannah Johnstone of Friends School for her entry in Rags/Riches titled “Queen of Coke”. The student 2nd Prize went to Victoria Bliss of Friends School with her entry in Nautical Ball titled “A’Hoy there Sailor”. The best model award went to Lucy Osborn (Shemanagment) of Howden.

June may be one of the colder months in Tasmania but this is all the more reason to visit the “COMFORT” exhibition. The Handweavers, Spinners & Dyers Guild of Tasmania Inc. are once again celebrating the Guild’s diverse collection of technical talent and design skills with their biennial exhibition. This year The Design Centre (Cnr Tamar and Brisbane Streets, Launceston Tasmania) will host the exhibition from Saturday 2 June until Sunday 1 July 2012.
