SANDRA FISHER Nature's Footprints. Altenburg Gallery Braidwood NSW 2622

Oct 1 - Oct 24 2010 website for updates: www.altenburg.com.au

"Having lived in rural Victoria and Braidwood NSW the natural environment has been an integral foundation for my life and my work. I have always drawn extensively from the textural, visceral and sensory elements to inspire my past and present works. This exhibition has brought together all the disciplines of my 30 years as an artist. Combining elements from my sculpture, painting, photography and computer, and using silk as another canvas, I again endeavor to show the utterly sublime beauty of the natural world with hopes to encourage us all toward its continued survival.

"In this current phase of my creative endeavors, research unearthed a blissful new field of dyeing materials, especially silk, using living plant materials provided by nature.

"Dyeing with plants and vegetables is an age old technique which modern artists like myself, are taking to a new level of contemporary style. I am governed by the seasons with my choice of plant material and I source only the best quality silks available. An opportunity to visit India in 2008 fueled my passion to develop my own techniques, to experiment with different weights and qualities of silk, to play with a variety of mordents and plant materials and to develop methods of producing distinctive designs.

"These designs allow me to incorporate another love – that of the female form. These artworks allow me to combine the sensual female forms with the sensual feel of silk. Enhanced by my digital photography I feel my wall hangings and artworks are like Nature encapsulated and allow me to continue my love of mixed media.

"Each garment, cushion cover or artwork is an original design created as if I were painting using plants instead of a brush and these natural plant dyes, which are non-toxic, are used in making eco friendly wearable art.

"The process of collecting plants, bundling, tying the fabric, and then, discovery of unwrapping, is a meditative process beyond my imagining. The world of plant dyeing has opened another wonderful panorama of creative possibilities and my hope is to inspire all to take another look at our wonderful Mother Nature and perhaps, as they say, to occasionally stop and smell the roses."

TAYENEBE – Tasmanian Aboriginal women’s fibre work exhibition is a travelling show through Visions of Australia, and will be at the Australian National Maritime Museum from March –May 2011. Tayenebe is a south eastern Aboriginal word meaning ‘exchange’. Over the past three years more than 25 Tasmanian Aboriginal women, aged from 7 to 87, have journeyed together across the island in a determined process of cultural retrieval. "The impetus for the tayenebe project has been the desire to reconnect with the cultural craft of Ancestors. Thirty-seven Aboriginal woven-twined baskets created during the 1800s from lily, iris, sedges and rushes that survive in museums internationally are particularly inspirational for these makers." The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, the National Museum of Australia and Arts Tasmania co-managed the project to ensure that the women involved had support and opportunities to express ideas from making to exhibition to writing and planning future work.’ There is a catalogue available from http://museumshop.tmag.tas.gov.au/store/viewItem.shop?idProduct=101
